A Values-Based Approach for Development: An Islamic Perspective

Abstract Recurrent and concurrent crises call for new development paradigms, as dominant theories of economic are not fostering equity or sustainability. We argue that part the reason is conceptualization development, resulting metrics driving decision-making, narrow. Building on work proposes adding values/ethics a fourth pillar to along with economic, environmental, social pillars, this article presents an Islamic perspective how values-based would differ from dominant, contemporary forms. While rooted in specific worldview, it has great relevance approximately quarter humanity adheres faith. offer holistic, approach drawing classical foundations lessons, different epistemic ideological orientation. On basis, we highlight five values could be foundation re-orienting development: vicegerency, justice, excellence, tranquility, freedom.
